Custom pet jumpers australia

What Photo Should I Use for a Custom Pet Portrait Hoodie?

The photo you choose is the single most important decision you make when ordering a custom pet portrait hoodie. The embroidery design is built entirely from that image. A great photo produces a stunning, recognisable portrait. A poor photo produces a blurry, hard-to-read result that does not do your pet justice.

At FAVERIT, we have created hundreds of custom pet portrait jumpers in our Melbourne studio. We have seen every type of photo imaginable. This guide tells you exactly what works, what does not, and what to do if the only photo you have is not perfect.

The short answer: A clear, well-lit, front-facing smartphone photo taken in natural daylight is ideal. Professional photography is not required. Most people already have a usable photo on their phone right now.

Why the Photo Matters So Much for a Custom Pet Hoodie

Unlike a printed hoodie where your photo is transferred directly onto fabric, FAVERIT's custom pet portrait hoodies use line-art embroidery. Your pet's photo is converted into a clean, minimalist line-art design, then stitched into the fabric using thousands of individual thread stitches.

This conversion process requires clear, distinguishable features in the photo. Our team needs to be able to see the shape of your pet's ears, the definition of their eyes, the structure of their face. When those features are visible and sharp in the photo, the embroidery captures them beautifully. When they are obscured, blurry, or lost in shadow, the embroidery cannot recreate what it cannot see.

This is also why a dog photo hoodie made through embroidery looks fundamentally different from a printed pet picture hoodie. The line-art embroidery style is intentional and elegant. It stylises your pet's features rather than reproducing them photographically. But that stylisation only works when the reference photo gives clear information to work from.

What Makes a Perfect Photo for a Custom Pet Portrait Hoodie

Lighting is the most important factor

Natural daylight produces the best results by a significant margin. Photos taken near a window or outdoors in soft daylight show your pet's features with clarity and without harsh shadows. The goal is even, consistent light across your pet's face.

Avoid photos taken in dark rooms, photos where a flash has created harsh highlights and deep shadows, and photos taken at night even with artificial lighting. Flash photography in particular can wash out your pet's features or create unflattering shadows that make the embroidery design harder to create.

The best time to take a photo specifically for your custom hoodie with dog picture is mid-morning or late afternoon outdoors, or next to a large window indoors. Overcast days are actually excellent for pet photography because the clouds diffuse the light evenly.

Front-facing or slight three-quarter angle

A photo where your pet is looking directly at the camera, or turned at a slight angle, gives the clearest view of the features that make your pet recognisable. The eyes, nose, ear shape and facial structure all come through most clearly from this angle.

Side profile shots can work for some breeds but lose a significant amount of facial detail. If your pet has distinctive markings or features that are only visible from the side, let us know when you order and we can discuss the best approach for your specific photo.

Sharp, in-focus face

Zoom into your pet's face in the photo before you submit it. If the face is blurry, soft, or pixelated at normal zoom, the embroidery design will struggle to capture the detail that makes your pet look like themselves rather than a generic dog or cat outline.

This does not mean you need a professional camera. Modern smartphone cameras produce more than enough resolution for a detailed embroidery design. What matters is that the pet was still for a moment and the face is in focus. A slightly blurry background is completely fine. A slightly blurry pet face is a problem.

Simple or neutral background

A clean background makes it easier to isolate your pet's features and create a cleaner embroidery design. Busy backgrounds, patterned furniture, or multiple objects in the frame are not disqualifying, but a simpler background produces better results.

If your only good photos of your pet have busy backgrounds, do not worry. Our team is experienced at working around background distractions. Submit the photo and let us assess it during the free design preview stage.

Sufficient size and resolution

Your photo needs to be large enough that your pet's face is not tiny in the frame. A photo where your dog or cat fills most of the frame, or at least the upper half, gives us the best detail to work with.

Very old photos, photos screenshotted multiple times, or images that have been heavily compressed can lose resolution. If you have the original photo file rather than a screenshot of it, always use the original.

What Photos Work for Different Pet Types

Dogs

For dog photo hoodies, the ideal shot shows your dog sitting or lying down, looking toward the camera, in good light. The face should be clearly visible and not obscured by long fur falling over the eyes.

For breeds with very long or fluffy coats, a photo where the fur is naturally parted or pulled back from the face produces the clearest embroidery. Photos taken just after grooming often work especially well for this reason.

For dark-coloured dogs, lighting matters even more. A black or very dark brown dog photographed in low light can be difficult to convert to line-art because the features are not distinguishable against the coat colour. Photograph dark dogs in bright natural light specifically to bring out the definition of their features.

Cats

Cat portrait photos work best when the cat is relaxed and not in motion. The typical front-facing sitting position that cats naturally adopt when watching something is ideal. Avoid photos taken mid-yawn, mid-movement, or from unusual angles that distort the facial proportions.

A picture of a dog and cat together works well if both animals are visible clearly and neither is obscuring the other. For multiple pet photos, the subjects need to be at roughly the same distance from the camera so they appear at a consistent scale in the embroidery.

Puppies and kittens

Puppy pictures and kitten photos can be more challenging because young animals rarely stay still. If you have a puppy picture where the face is sharp and well-lit, it will work beautifully. If every photo you have is slightly blurred from movement, a video screenshot can sometimes produce a clearer still image than your best photo.

Other animals

FAVERIT embroiders any pet. Rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, horses, and other animals all follow the same principles. The face should be the focal point of the image, clearly lit and in focus.

What to Do If Your Photos Are Not Perfect

The photo is blurry or low resolution

Before concluding your photos are not usable, send us the best one at info@faverit.com.au and ask for an honest assessment. We regularly work with photos that customers were not confident about and produce excellent results. The free design preview will show you exactly how the embroidery will look before any stitching begins.

Your pet is no longer with you

Many of our orders are pet memorial hoodies for dogs, cats, and other animals who have passed away. In these cases, the available photos are whatever was taken during the pet's life, and they are often not ideal for embroidery.

Old photos, photos from phones that have been upgraded several times, or photos that were never taken with embroidery in mind are all workable. Send us what you have. Our team has extensive experience turning imperfect memorial photos into beautiful embroidery designs. For more on memorial orders, see our page on Pet Memorial Hoodies.

Your pet never stays still

Action shots and candid photos can work if the face happens to be sharp in the frame. Video screenshots are worth trying. If you want a fresh photo specifically for your custom hoodie, the best technique is to use a treat or toy to get your pet's attention, hold it just above the camera lens, and take several rapid shots. One of them will usually have the face sharp and looking toward camera.

You have multiple photos and are not sure which is best

Send us the top two or three candidates when you place your order. Our team will assess them and recommend the best one for embroidery during the design preview stage. There is no additional charge for this.

Photos for Multiple Pets on One Hoodie

FAVERIT can embroider up to 5 subjects on a single personalised pet hoodie. For multiple pets, you have two options.

The first option is a single photo containing all the pets together. This works when the pets are close together, similarly sized, and all clearly visible. A picture of two dogs sitting side by side looking at the camera is an excellent example.

The second option is separate photos of each pet, which are then combined into a single embroidery design. This works well when your pets are different sizes, difficult to photograph together, or one is no longer with you. Upload one photo per pet and note in your order that you would like them combined.

For a picture of a dog and cat together, the same principles apply. Both animals need to be clearly visible and not obscuring each other in the frame.

Christmas and Seasonal Pet Photos

Pet photos taken at Christmas, birthdays, or other occasions can make particularly meaningful custom hoodie designs. A Christmas picture with your dog wearing a festive bandana or sitting next to a tree can become a beautiful embroidery.

The same photo quality rules apply regardless of the occasion. The face needs to be clear, well-lit, and in focus. Seasonal props and backgrounds add character without affecting the quality of the embroidery as long as the pet's features are visible.

If you are ordering a custom pet portrait hoodie as a Christmas gift for a dog mum or pet lover, the photo of their pet is the foundation of the gift. A thoughtful photo choice makes the difference between a generic pet gift and something that makes them stop and stare.

The Free Design Preview: Your Safety Net

Whatever photo you submit, the free design preview is your guarantee that the result will be exactly what you hoped for before any stitching begins.

After you place your order and upload your photo, FAVERIT's team converts it into a line-art embroidery design and sends you a complete digital preview. You can see your pet's portrait exactly as it will appear on the hoodie. If anything does not look right, you request a change. Unlimited revisions are included at no additional cost. Stitching only begins once you personally approve the design.

This means that even if your photo was not perfect, the preview stage gives you the opportunity to see the result and request adjustments before committing to the final product.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Photos for Custom Hoodies

What is the best photo to use for a custom pet portrait hoodie? A clear, well-lit, front-facing photo of your pet taken in natural daylight produces the best embroidery result. The face should be in focus and fill a significant portion of the frame. Smartphone photos are completely suitable. Professional photography is not required.

Can I use an old photo of a pet who has passed away? Yes. FAVERIT regularly creates memorial hoodies from older photos. Send us what you have and our team will assess it honestly. The free design preview means you will see the result before any stitching begins. We treat every memorial order with particular care.

Does my photo need to be taken by a professional photographer? No. A sharp, well-lit smartphone photo is ideal. The camera quality in modern smartphones is more than sufficient for a detailed line-art embroidery design. What matters is that the face is clear and in focus, not the equipment used to take the photo.

Can I use a photo with multiple pets for a custom dog picture sweatshirt? Yes. FAVERIT can embroider up to 5 subjects on a single hoodie. You can submit a single photo with multiple pets together, or separate photos of each pet to be combined into one design. Note your preference in the order notes.

What if my dog or cat never stays still for photos? Try using a treat or toy held just above the camera lens to get your pet's attention, then take rapid consecutive shots. Video screenshots can also sometimes capture a sharp still frame. If nothing is working, send us your best available photo and we will advise during the design preview.

Can I use a screenshot or a photo from social media? Social media platforms compress images significantly, which reduces the resolution of your photo. If possible, always use the original full-resolution photo file rather than a screenshot or social media download. If the original is not available, submit what you have and we will assess it.

What if I submit the wrong photo by mistake? Contact FAVERIT at info@faverit.com.au within 12 hours of placing your order if you need to change the photo. Once the design process has begun, changes may not be possible. The sooner you contact us, the better.

Does the background in the photo matter? A simple background produces cleaner results but is not essential. Our team can work around busy or complex backgrounds. A background that obscures part of your pet's face is more of a problem than a busy background that is clearly separated from the subject.
